When we were teens working our first jobs, waiting tables at a private school in the summer, when scientists would come from the world over to have conferences, study, and get fed three times a day, we witnessed the more extreme cases of allergic reactions when a scientist asked if there were any shellfish in the fare we were serving. The stuffing of the meat, it turned out, had shredded something—crab or lobster—and the man swelled, turned red, and had to be rushed to the hospital. What is most frightening, I think, is that such allergic reactions can include the tongue swelling. Think about it. If your tongue swells too far, it will block your breathing passages. You’re done.

In my case, many years after my fear that we had killed an important person—who showed up unshaken the next morning, by the way—it turns out I had allergic reactions to soy products: I loved to (and was so lazy about cooking that I would) eat raw hot dogs. At the same time, I was experimenting with health food store items and had drunk a big glass of soy milk. Imagine: an innocuous little thing like a bean….

I have, in my third and fourth decades of living, discovered some of the most unusual of allergic reactions and have learned the most interesting of realities about allergies. The education began when I was teaching my second semester of college English. As one up to that point who rarely missed a day of work, I was appalled to find one very early summer morning that I had an enflamed face and that every pore on my face had filled with a blister—a tiny pustule that was, as if the redness wasn’t enough, itchy.

When I went to the clinic (not yet having medical coverage of any kind), the clinician seemed nonplussed. She told me with a shrug that 1) I would have to experiment by isolating foods in my most recent diet until I found the culprit (since I had not changed laundry or body soaps didn’t add any chemicals or perfumes to my repertoire, etc.); and 2) I had developed these allergic reactions—or allergic symptoms—all of a sudden…that my perfect health record of many years had nothing to do with the fact that as we get older, she said, we can pathogenically change: we can develop allergies to foods we have eaten our whole lives.

Allergic reactions as I describe are no big deal, really; and a tube of Benadryl cream and a Benadryl capsule (which makes you sleep, so watch out) are all that were needed. But other allergic reactions are hideous, drastic, and emergent. Many require immediate medical attention, as they are deadly…or, the allergens causing the allergic reactions are.

The following are themes that have been tried and tested by moms out there. Along with the appropriate decoration ideas, games, activities and invitations, these two themes for a teen’s birthday party are the most popular.

1. The Detective Party

Here, teenagers engage in a Search and Riddle theme party. This is a take on a Murder in a Party consisting of a game asking “Who am I?” and the second a longer one because it is a Treasure Hunt.

You wouldn’t need much with this party. To prepare for a Detective theme, all you need to do is be inspired by those “who done it” murder mysteries. Once you have a story going on then you can incorporate all these ideas and let the teens join in by asking them to solve the mystery.

It’s not scary. It wouldn’t give the teenagers any nightmare after playing the Detective game. In fact, it’s fun when played in the evening because the darkness adds more to the excitement.

As for the clues, you can hide these inside the house. It’s a 90 minute up to two hour party. It depends on how many guests are invited.

2. The Survivor Party

Inspired by the popular reality show, you don’t need to have it playing in the background to show the teenagers because chances are they have already seen an episode or two. The main game of the party is different from the show because no one gets voted off. It is fun and friendly competition.

The teenagers are encouraged to use their imaginations and their brains. They are also asked to do a lot of noise and a couple of yucky stuff like eat exotic food. This is suitable if you are planning on hosting a fast paced party.

The preparation time for this party is mostly two hours because you will be needing a lot of food here for the game. A game we suggest that you play is the spin the wheel and then it shows a particular food the teenager will eat.

It is suitable for indoors as well as outdoors. You can also try out for the water-based games.

So what can I do you say, well thanks to modern technology all this is about to change. The days of searching endlessly for employment are fast coming to an end as the internet slowly takes over and starts filling this increasing need in the teen job market. When it comes to jobs for teens it is now possible for them to land their dream job in under ten minutes no matter who they are. When they take a job online there are no lengthy, intimidating interviews to go through and their application is always accepted no matter where you live or what qualifications they may or may not have. When you compare this to the difficulty of applying for and getting a normal advertised job it is no wonder that thousands of teens are switching to paid online jobs.

Paid online work beats traditional jobs hands down every time. Online jobs these days mostly consist of completing online survey’s as these are generally higher paying when it comes to the types of work you can do online and they make fantastic jobs for teens. Most teens that are doing these surveys are earning at least $10 for a twelve minute survey with the money getting transferred to their account on completion.

The surveys themselves are extremely easy to complete and there is an unlimited number of different types of surveys that can be taken. There are no set times that they have to work, teens can quickly and easily work at their own pace as often or as little as they like each week, it’s up to them. By just taking 3 surveys per day, 5 days per week, a teen is capable of earning $150.00 per week. Just try finding a job anywhere else that pay’s as well as this that will hire them instantly.

It’s an uphill battle for parents that want their kids to avoid the downsides of alcohol abuse. But what the heck you say, it’s just a “Right of passage.” If you rationalize letting teens drink at your house because “At least they’re not driving” then you’re asking for more trouble than you can imagine. Teenage drinking is at epidemic levels and getting worse. Not just for teens that drink but for the parents that don’t consider it a big deal.

Social host liability laws are popping up everywhere and the adults that allow or support illegal drinking even in their own home are going to make for some painful situations for parents who want to look the other way.

Furthermore, the adults don’t have to be home to be held liable. Each community may have its own laws about who is going to be held accountable for underage drinking. Jail time, fines, community service, and plenty of embarrassment are a few of the consequences but the real consequence comes when there is some accident or assault that occurs. The consequences of the latter last a lifetime.

“All states now have zero tolerance laws for people under 21 – which means, when you get behind the wheel you are breaking the law for ANY level of alcohol in your body.”

If you’re the kind of parent that likes to tie one on once in a while and don’t see any harm in letting young adults experience the joys of booze then you need a little reality check. Teenager are getting killed far too often after a few drinks and a little time behind the wheel. But our teenagers don’t necessarily suffer the consequences of poor choices all by themselves. Unfortunately, they usually take a few more victims with them. This isn’t moral preaching here, this is fact.

Let your teenagers drink and the likelihood of someone or something getting hurt goes way up. Could be a drunk-driving incident, could be alcohol abuse, could be sexual assault, and the list of wonderful side effects of being a little over-permissive go on and on.

Do a little homework in your neighborhood and check the local laws about social hosting. That’s the law that holds parents accountable who provide the place for underage drinking and/or the alcohol. If you have teens or pre-teens this might be a good time to make sure you and your children’s friend’s parents are aware of their legal and responsibilities when it comes to teens that drink at home. Here are a few things you can do as a parent when your child is going to someone else’s house for a party or just a little hang time.

1. ASK YOUR KIDS QUESTIONS. Who is going to be there? Where are the parents? Is this a boy/girl situation? What’s the occasion? Will there be any form of drinking or even the possibility of drugging going on there? (That last one is a bit blunt but it’s a good idea to teach your kids how to be direct and blunt too!)

2. CALL THE OTHER PARENTS. Yeah, you’re going to be appreciated and rejected at the same time. Other parents may not appreciate the fact that you would question them about this while other parents will be very appreciative of your inquiry.

3. SAY NO. If you have any suspicions that something is amiss, it probably is. If you don’t get a straight answer out of your kid or the other parents then say “No, it ain’t happenin’ junior!” Then, find an alternative and sponsor it yourself. “You can’t go to the party but I’ll be glad to give you and three of your friends tickets to the movies, bowling, roller skating, etc.” Offer to make a big batch of their favorite snacks and rent a few movies at your house. Get creative but get real. Saying “no” doesn’t get any easier as your teenager becomes more and more independent.

When your kids accuse you of not trusting them, let them know it is not a matter of trust when it comes to the power of drugs and alcohol, it’s a matter of facts. People do stupid things under the influence and as a parent you know the facts.

Even though you may trust your child, you cannot trust people you don’t know or the persuasive power of “group think” when there’s other influences like peer pressure and booze pressure. By the way, parents also face an awful lot of peer pressure. They want to be “cool parents” for their kids and they don’t want to be the “prudes” down the street.

4. SAY YES. If you feel things are safe then say yes. And, let your child know there are times when she has to call you and check in regardless of what the event is. Good times to check in are when they arrive, just before they leave to come home, just before bedtime (if a sleepover), etc.

If for some reason they forget to call you (and they will) then teach them that this is not acceptable and YOU pick up the phone and dial them. If they don’t answer their cell phone you might be a little suspicious. It’s a good idea to just make it a very simple rule. When your teen is away from home and you call, they better answer the phone. Of course, if your teen is in a movie theater and can’t pick up the phone or dial you they can call back when it’s over. If your kids get a little paranoid that you’re checking up on them then that’s not a bad thing.

Keep talking to other parents and make sure you let those who call you know how much you appreciate their concern. Make a pact with other parents whenever you can to check in with each other and compare notes.

5. PREPARE FOR SCREW UPS. If your teenage blows it and makes a mistake it’s important to have a plan. If he gets behind the wheel of a car and he’s afraid to call you or a cab then everyone is in real danger. Start repeating this over and over to your teen. No matter when, where, or under what circumstances it happens, if you make a mistake and get into a situation where there are drugs or drinking, your parents will always come and get you anytime, anywhere with no questions asked.

If your teen is in a predicament where there is drinking taking place and she needs a way to extricate herself then give her a private code between the two of you that she can use when she calls home. She can call you and pretend to have an argument about why she should not come home. That way she can save face with her friends and maybe her life. Say this over and over because it could save some serious heartache.

If you make a habit of asking questions of your kids and their friend’s parents your kids may begin to wonder if you have eyes in the back of your head. They may be surprised to find out that you heard about so-and-so getting into trouble at the last party because your kids certainly weren’t going to share that with you. Being in-the-know is good for you and good for your kids.

Remember, your job is to keep your kids away from booze and drugs as long as possible. Studies have proven that the longer your child avoids alcohol and drugs the better chance they have of living a life free of its many painful consequences.

If we were to do a survey that asked how many of us feel happy with our bodies, what percentage do you think would answer, “I am happy with how my body looks?”

Research done about body image shows that women are much more critical of their appearance than men. They are much less likely to like what they see in the mirror. Eight out of ten women will be dissatisfied with their reflection, and more than half may see a distorted image.* Young women need more self-confidence and self-esteem in themselves.

Young people these days are bombarded with media messages every day. We watch TV shows and movies with perfect looking actors, and we read fashion magazines picturing top models.

How can we not end up feeling inadequate? We compare our looks with actors and models, and then we feel awful because we aren’t as skinny, or don’t have the same straight nose, or the same hair, or big eyes, etc.

What we don’t know is how many plastic surgery procedures the models may have gone through, how the photos are touched up and airbrushed, and how many actors and models feel the need to starve to maintain their demanded body weight. The models appear to have it all because of their looks, but do we really know if they are happy? Would you be happy if millions of people were judging your body on screen or in magazines? Would you be happy if you could rarely eat?

No wonder there are so many ads for weight loss wonder pills and instant diet plans. We see before and after pictures that lead us to believe that our lives will be perfect if we can only lose the weight. Then we will be beautiful, right?

Again, what the media doesn’t tell us is that many of the people in those miracle weight loss commercials are paid quite handsomely to lose weight, and are even using other methods beside the product advertised. Also, they don’t tell us how many of these people gain the weight back and then some after the diet is over.

These companies spend millions of dollars on marketing to figure out new ways of attracting people to their product. Be aware of the big, bad advertising monsters who make you feel as if you have to look a certain way to be a worthwhile person.

Another big influence can be your friends and family members who are overweight and will tell that you need to lose weight as well. The question you may ask is, if they need to lose weight, why do you also need to lose weight? Do they want you to be unhappy with your body? It seems as if the pressure to be skinny never ends.

Unfortunately, excessive and prolonged dieting can lead to eating disorders.

Overeating is usually caused by emotions. You may notice that when you feel tired, angry, or lonely, you reach for a cookie or another slice of pizza.

Next time you eat, ask yourself the question, “Am I eating because I feel hungry, or is there another reason?”

Eat a variety of foods, and make fruits and veggies part of your daily food intake. If you are not already doing so, find a sport that you enjoy. It might take a few tries for you to find one that fits you best, but keep looking. Being physically active will help you feel better about your body.

Unfortunately, some sports nowadays do cost a lot of money, which can create a big problem for teens. If that is the case, there are other ways to keep your body fit. Go for walks with your dog (or your friends), go bicycling, play Frisbee, jump rope, just get moving. Even mowing the lawn is good exercise, and you may also be able to charge for it and make some money on the side!

There are many reasons that prompted a teenager to have a job. The teen wants money that he can spend without asking approval from his parents. Others include his need to test his abilities and learn skills which prepares him to more serious career considerations upon finishing his studies. Another reason is the desire to meet challenges that are only found in the world of the grownups. There is also the need to prove to his friends that he can have a job despite of his young age.

Finding a teen job is not that difficult. There is always the local directory where jobs are listed. Various agencies also have their own listings and these can be accessed online. The local newspapers are a good source for job postings. If your teen wants a detailed information, his best source are his friends who are already moonlighting there.

If finding a job is easy, getting the right job is somewhat difficult. If there are many jobs available, there are more teens are applying for these jobs. Competition is stiff. If the teen applicant wants to have an edge, then he must see to it that he has the required skills and qualifications. Again, free skills training are available. All the teen has to do is contact the right agencies.

The bottom line is whether or not the teen’s studies can be affected by his hourly jobs. The ambition of the teens to continue and finish their studies remains, so with the dreams of the parents to see their teens get the much coveted diploma. Will the pressures of the job threaten this? Stanford and Temple Universities reported that teens working on part time jobs for more than 20 hours per week have less competence in their studies. They are also found out to be more detached from the parents because they cannot come home during their free time. The same report showed evidence that these working teens are more prone to alcohol and drugs because of the pressures of both work and studies. Also, they have money which they can use without restrictions by their parents. Others are forced to shift to simple courses because they cannot anymore handle complicated reports and home works. But others have put up to the challenge because their work environments teach them to come out as strong and determined teens.

The most affected aspect however is the teen-parent relationship. Here, the teens no matter how close they are to their parents always have difficulty to come home even if he wants to. Both their jobs and studies are eating their time.

It is just necessary for the parents to remind their children that education must be given top priority. They have to be motivated to do their best in both aspects, as the job and studies can supplement each other. If possible, the teens must only get a few hours of work per week. If the teens want hourly jobs then let them get these jobs while continuing their studies. Ever heard of killing two birds with one stone?

You’d think this shirtless teen idol wouldn’t be so buff, well you’d be wrong. Girls are absolutely gushing over the Zacster’s perfect boy candy physique. Girls also fell in love with the “messing up the status quo” fun high school love story of this Jock and a science nerd (played by Vanessa Hudgens). This guy is an overnight Hollywood success with the release of High school musical, High School Musical 2, and of course High School musical 3. He’s now getting more roles in serious films. Good for him.

He may not be as old as a backstreet boy, but Justin Timberlake has been around for a long time. The Nsync front man was first singled out for his boyish appeal. He is also probably the most talented one in the group, which is why his solo career has been a big success. Justin once took off his shirt in a concert a couple of years back just to show the fans that he’s still got it. And true enough, he did. He works out and it shows.

Jonas Bothers
The Jonas brothers may not yet be fully fledged men, but that doesn’t stop the drooling fans from downloading the pictures of these shirtless teen idols. What is perhaps most interesting is that their young age makes them even more appealing to some people.

1. Buy My Own Island fund: Set up a minor’s Individual Retirement Account through your brokerage.  This should be the first auto-deposit every month — money that earns money while you sleep!  The habit of investing is what’s important to establish first.  If you don’t know which stocks or funds to buy, just use a Treasury bill ETF for now.  (PowerShares.com has one.)
2. Charity: Have your teenagers write a check to their favorite charity and pop it in the mail!  (Let it be their choice, not yours.)
3. Education fund: College savings plans, aka 529 plans, are a great way to save up for college and the contribution should be tax deductible.
4. Fun, Immediate: CASH!!  Whether it’s a movie or ice cream, when the cash runs out, the fun must become free — like picnics, like board games, like spin the bottle (just kidding).
5. Fun, Big Ticket: Most bank accounts have a savings account attached these days.  Let that be where your teen saves up for the new iPod or even a car!
6. Basic Needs: Standard Bank Account.  The key here is to have 50% spent on thriving first — before basic needs — so that the focus is on living a rich life, instead of struggling to survive.  Now, your teen has 50% of the $100, or only $50 to spend on basic needs.  Your teen won’t have to worry about food, housing and insurance yet, but why not let them buy their own shampoo, after school snacks, gas, clothes, etc?

What we’re doing with the Thrive budget is teaching the average person exactly what it takes to live like a billionaire.  Billionaires, like Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple Computer, understand the flow of money.  They sleep on couches to launch their dream businesses.  They sit on non-profit boards to meet the great minds and deep wallets who will invest in their dreams.  They never overspend on basic needs or fleeting fantasies. So, tell your teen that this is Billionaire Boot Camp!  S/he’s never going to get rich by burning through her dough and/or blowing her charitable contributions on movies.   

If s/he wants more money for fun, there is one easy way to do that while remaining in the dream come true life budget — increase income.  If her basic needs are out of whack — which is easy to do with high gas prices — there’s a solution for that — get creative!

My teenage son discovered that he was spending over $50 a week on gas going to work and college.  The second week, he bought a bike and pedaled around town for free.  That was an instant reduction in basic needs!  Get creative.  Carpool.  Take public transportation.  Buy a hybrid or an electric car.  Ride a bike. 

The best solution to a surly teen, however, is to start these money habits earlier.   Teens are so busy trying to buy more freedom from you that they’ll forget to attack the family traditions that have been ingrained since elementary school.

Well, making money for a teen may be even easier today than in the past because there are so many more entrepreneurial ideas out there now that industrious teens can even start projects to earn money and end up with a career. But even if your teen’s goal does not go much further than some extra money for burgers or candy, getting a teen started now learning about financial responsibility will be a lesson taken with them for a lifetime.

There are many ideas that can net a teen some cash. Here we’ll discuss some of the more common routes teens take and some more creative ideas for a teen to make some money.

Retail/Food Service
Many teens of working age (15 and up) find after school or weekend work at local fast food restaurants or in retail stores in the mall. Many such establishments will work with a teen on schedules and offer minimum wage.

Babysitter
With so many parents having to go back to work, there is a larger need for after school child care. Teens who are too young to work in retail can find work sitting with neighborhood children.

Handy Person
If you live in a community where there are elderly neighbors or single moms, a teen can find lots of odd jobs to do. Lawn care, painting, snow removal, and general repairs can be done by teens on a regular or as-needed basis. Go door to door or posts “work wanted” signs at the local grocery store.

Computer Lessons
For teens who are technologically advanced, they can earn some side money teaching others how to use computers and software. There are many adults who are not computer capable and would likely pay for lessons in basic knowledge of software and internet.

Paid Internships
Teens who have an idea of what they want to be “when they grow up” might be able to secure a paid internship in the industry they plan to pursue. This internship will not only earn them an income but it will also provide invaluable information and experience teens can carry with them after high school graduation. If you have friends or relatives in the industry of choice, ask for referrals on paid internship opportunities or speak with the school’s guidance counselor.

Monthly Car Wash
If your teen has a group of friends who are interested in earning some weekend cash, they can organize monthly car washes. If hosted each month, the community becomes more aware of the service and teens can likely get repeat and new customers each month.

Selling Skills
If a teen is artistically inclined, they can visit weekend farmer’s markets or other locations and provide charactures or drawings of customers. There are many skills a teen may have developed at a young age and can easily learn how to earn money using their skills. This can be their first lesson in freelancing towards a profitable future career.

Tutoring
If your teen excels at a specific subject, they can advertise their tutoring services around the community or throughout school. Tutoring often generates a decent hourly pay and if the teen is able to take on tutoring work for more than one student at a time, they can earn a nice income.

All teens will have different ideas about how they want to earn money and there are many opportunities available to them if they have the support and encouragement from their parents. Teens who learn money management lessons now will likely avoid debt hassles in the future.
